Brushless DC Motor (BLDC motor for short) is a DC motor that uses an electronic commutation system instead of the traditional mechanical commutation system. It has the characteristics of high efficiency, reliability, and simple maintenance, and is widely used in aerospace, electric vehicles, industrial automation and other fields.
How Does a BLDC Motor Work?
A BLDC motor has three main components:
Stator, when powered, creates and a constantly shifting magnetic field.
Rotor, which contains fixed magnets that spin within the shifting magnetic field.
Electronic control systems, include position sensors, controllers, power switches and other components.
During operation, the electronic control system controls the power switches to turn on in sequence to generate a magnetic field based on the information provided by the position sensor. This magnetic field interacts with the current in the stator coils, causing the rotor to start spinning. As the rotor rotates, the position sensor continuously provides new information, and the control system adjusts the conduction sequence of the power switches to keep the motor rotating.
Different from traditional DC motors, during the operation of brushless DC motors, the electronic control system monitors the position of the rotor in real time to ensure that the current only generates the maximum electromagnetic force between the stator coil and the magnet. In this way, the brushless DC motor achieves efficient and smooth operation while eliminating the wear caused by mechanical commutation.
